With that said here is the deal, about a year ago I realized that our Mexican Genealogy Facebook Group had limitations and that most of the postings were for South Texas and Northeastern Mexico. I created a Facebook group for each state but hesitated to announce it to everyone and had been putting it off. I named my little project “The Mexico State Facebook Project”.

I created a centralized page here on this website to make it easier to find the groups, explain what the project is about, and also to ask you and everyone else for help. This project is not a one-person show, it is and must be a community project. Thus each group requires at least three moderators and for some, I think up to five as they grow.

I announced this project on Facebook two days ago and some groups (some Northern States) are past 80 members while others (deep Mexico states) have only me as a member.

My hopes are that each group gets to grow and that we get Moderators to volunteer. Moderators have the same capabilities as administrators with the exception that they can’t change settings such as group name or make other people administrators or moderators.

I want to thank Gregorry Pisaño, since about two months ago I got a message out of the blue asking to manage the Sonora Group. Somehow he found the project page and took the initiative to volunteer. So I added him and it got me to get the ball rolling again. Then a few weeks later Cindy A. Medina also asked to manage some of the groups. I knew we were on to something special.

The final motivator was Eric Edgar who pointed out in our group that, our group was not useful for researchers that were not from South Texas and or Northeastern Mexico. I challenged him to moderate the States from where his ancestors were from and he did. These three people showed me that the project can succeed since it will allow anyone to focus on each state and remove the clutter of our big group.

I do plan to ask moderators to share their posts from time to time in our main group so that members can become aware of their state groups so they can grow and at the same time provide everyone with a better representation of other states in Mexico and not just the Northern ones.

Ok, I think that I over provided you with background information about this new project.

    Hi Moises,
    This is a great idea!
I’ve been researching my family from Sinaloa for a few years now. While I’ve learned a lot, I know I have even more to learn.
With that said, I can certainly help others who might be getting started. I’m not fluent in Spanish, but I can read records reasonably well, and can offer ideas on where to look for certain records.
Unfortunately, there are no Civil Records for Sinaloa on the familysearch website, but I know the Sinaloa State Archive has them available. The administrator there, Carlos Bastidas, is fluent in English so that helps tremendously.
Wondering how much time you think might be required to be a moderator. It’s something i’d consider doing if you’re still looking. Thanks!

It is very simple. Moderators approve or deny requests to join group, share resources for each state as they come across their own research, and enforce the community rules.

Thank you for accepting me in the group. I have been researching my ancestry for about four years. I have now traced my great grandparents Gumecindo Diaz Marquez and wife Paula Cortez Garcia to Mier, Tamaulips, Mexico. I hope this group will help me in my search. This is very informative And have already found a fouth cousin who is also in the group.
