Francisco de Ibarra was the first to colonize Durango, he settled this part of the vast northern province of Nueva Vizcaya. On July 8, 1563 he founded the capital city and named it Durango for the Basque town Durango, Biscay, Spain. Durango along with the present states of Chihuahua, Sonora, and Sinaloa, formed part of the province of Nueva Vizcaya, the name that was used during the Colonial Period to designate the territory discovered by Captain Francisco de Ibarra between 1554 and 1567.

You can expect to find records going all the way back up until 1604 maybe earlier if you get lucky.

I am looking for my ancestors in Mexico and have run into a brick wall, so I was hoping that you might give me some direction. My great grandfather was from Zacatecas or Aguascalientes, my grandfather Jesus Palacios Macias was born in Villa Garcia, Zacatecas. Is there any where that I might look to get some information about their birth records or deaths? I really appreciate any help you can give me … Thanks.
