Diccionario Biografico del Occidente Novohispano
Last Names of Nuevo Leon

The books titled Diccionario Biografico del Occidente Novohispano by Thomas Hillerkuss contain a treasure trove of genealogical information.

I first came aware of them a few years ago while researching some ancestors out of Zacatecas.

As far as I am aware of, there are four volumes covering the last names starting with the letter A through L and a fifth book that supplements the last book that contains many family trees.

This collection of books contain the names of everyone that the author could find residing in or having ties with people from the present states of Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Sonora, Agauscalientes, Zacatecas, Coahuila, Durnago and Chihuahua. He goes as to also include parts of Michoacan, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Arizona and New Mexico.

For each name the author tries to provide a short biography and include the names of family when possible. He states that the main goal is so that researchers can tell people apart and also help others more easily find documentation for each individual.

Even though he covers this huge area he only included people from the 16th century, mainly from the early 1500's to the late 1600's but even earlier and or further depending on ancestry or descendancy of the people mentioned.
