Just wanted to make you aware of an indispensable book for your genealogy research and that I have used to trace my own Mexican Ancestors. It is the book “SAGRADA MITRA DE GUADALAJARA, ANTIGUO OBISPADO DE LA NUEVA GALICIA, EXPEDIENTES DE LA SERIE DE MATRIMONIOS. EXTRACTOS SIGLOS XVII-XVIII”, by María de la Luz Montejano Hilton.

This is an excellent book that contains genealogical extractions concerning marriages and marriage dispensations for over half of Mexico and includes some from, La Provincia de Tejas, what is now Texas. The time period covered are from the 1600’s to the 1700’s. Bellow you can see a table of contents to get the idea of the scope that this work encompasses.

Each extraction is a short paragraph that contains all the genealogical information found on the original documents. Once you find your Mexican Ancestors in this book you might want to get the copies of the original since there may be from 5 to 20 pages of additional information.

You might be wondering where you may be able to obtain this book. I first came into contact with this book at the Special Collections of the University of Texas Pan american. I searched everywhere and could not find it for sale. I was recently searching the catalog found at FamilySearch and I came across this book. I do not know if it is a mistake but for what ever reason they are allowing everyone to download this book as a PDF.

About This Website

This website Mexican Genealogy was born out of inquiry’s that I used to receive on my personal blog We Are Cousins. We Are Cousins focuses on South Texas and the Northern states of Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and Coahuila. An often question that I would get was “How do I get started with Mexican Genealogical Research?”. As a response I created this website to refer those inquiring. If you are also new I highly recommend that you sign up to our “Meet Your Ancestors” email series.

Have Fun and Learn!
